Bye Bye Bayern?

Weeell, how about that! A big bang for the current champions from Munich, as they get smashed by their former coach Felix Magath and his team VFL Wolfsburg. This week’s big game ended with a 5-1 victory of the Volkswagen team which brought them the top position in the tables. Especially the strikers Grafite and Dzeko who both scored twice, were responsible for the embarrassing loss of the team from Bavaria. The Wolfsburg attackers have now scored 35 goals together, being the best duo in the league. Highlight of the game was without a doubt the 5-1, Grafite 20th goal of the season, humiliating the whole defense by scoring with his heel. Ouch! Two minutes from time, Magath remembered the famous saying ‘Revenge is a dish, best served cold’ and substituted his goalkeeper. A slap in the Bayern face. But as much as the nation enjoys their loss, they are still only three points away from the Bundesliga top position.

Four other games were played, among them another interesting match between Hamburg and newly rich 1899 Hoffenheim. The 1887 founded red shorts as the Hamburg team are called showed everyone that there is a bit more than a twelve year difference between both teams. Jonathan Pitroipa scored the only goal of the match, elevating his team to 2nd place of the Bundesliga tables.

Wolfsburg and Hamburg now lead with 51 points after Berlin were defeated by Borussia Dortmund 1-3 and dropped to third place. In the last couple of games Hertha needed only one chance to score and to win the game, now they had plenty of them and lost. Every German football fan is relieved now because nobody could’ve imagined Berlin winning the Bundesliga championship. Simply not possible.

Meanwhile Stuttgart needed lots of luck and a last minute goal by defender and German international Serdar Tasci to win in Bochum 2-1. A few minutes earlier Hilbert threw an opportunity to score in the garbage can after he failed to push the ball a single meter in front of the goal line. He chose the Bochum sky instead. But he was not the only Stuttgart player who made a mock of himself. You can always rely on Jens Lehman there. He wanted to make the game more interesting and therefore caught a cross and sailed with the ball still in his hands over the goal line. But still, he doesn’t give up his 2010 South Africa dreams. That’s the spirit!

Frankfurt enjoyed a ‘Bundesliga relegation classic’ hosting Energie Cottbus, the only Bundesliga team from the former GDR. Frankfurt won 2-1. ‘Nuff said.
